Google Ads can be the fastest way to get customers for your business. Or the fastest way to waste money if you don't know what you're doing. The difference is in the setup. In this guide we explain how to create your first Google Ads campaign as a freelancer, with a minimum budget and without making the mistakes that cost 90% of beginners money.
When does it make sense to invest in Google Ads?
Google Ads makes sense when you need immediate results (SEO takes months), when your service has enough margin to absorb the advertising cost, and when competition in your area is high. For a dentist in Valencia charging 60 euros per consultation, paying 3 euros per click can be very profitable. For a plumber charging 50 euros for a one-off job, the margin is tighter.
How much to invest: minimum budget to start
Start with 5 euros a day (150 euros a month). It's enough to test which keywords work in your area. Don't increase the budget until you have real data from at least 2-3 weeks. Set a maximum CPC of 2 euros to avoid surprises. And turn on conversion tracking from day one.
Keywords: the most expensive mistake of all
The number one mistake is using keywords that are too broad. If you're a plumber in Elche and you bid on 'plumber', you'll be competing with all of Spain. Use local, specific keywords: 'emergency plumber Elche', 'fix pipe Alicante', 'drain unblocking Elche price'. Add negative keywords so you don't pay for irrelevant clicks: 'jobs', 'course', 'free', 'how to become'.
Campaign structure for freelancers
Create one campaign for each main service, don't put everything in a single one. If you're an electrician doing installations, repairs and certificates, create three separate ad groups. That way you can write specific ads for each service and measure what works best.
Writing ads that convert
A good ad includes: the keyword in the headline, a clear benefit (free quote, reply within 1 hour, 20 years of experience), a direct call to action (Call now, Request a quote), and call and location extensions. Create at least 3 headline variants and 2 description variants so Google can optimise automatically.
Measuring results: what isn't measured can't be improved
Set up conversion tracking in Google Ads linked to Google Analytics. Define what counts as a conversion for your business: a call, a completed form, a WhatsApp message. Review the data weekly and pause keywords that spend but don't convert.
Google Ads works for freelancers if it's set up well. Start with a small budget, specific local keywords and conversion tracking. Measure, adjust and scale only what works. And remember: Google Ads complements SEO, it doesn't replace it. Combining both is the most powerful strategy.
